Letters are primarily concerned with an "Indian Expedition" undertaken by an Ohio Volunteer Cavalry regiment in Kansas and Oklahoma. they describe an attack by "Jayhawkers," a trip between Fort Scott (Kan.) and Fort Gibson (Okla.), the poor quality of the regiment's colonel, the possibility of the it going to Kentucky to fight guerrillas, and the prosepects for the Civil War.
